Johnes Scheme
Johnes disease is a chronic infectious disease caused by infection with Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP). The clinical symptoms of Johnes Disease are characterised by chronic continuous or intermittent watery diarrhoea. While clinically ill animals continue to eat, they gradually lose condition and finally die.
It is a disease notifiable to the Department of Agriculture through the District Veterinary Office and regulated by the Johne’s Disease Order, 1955
(S.I. No. 86 of 1955).
There is currently a National Programme in place for Johnes Disease – this programme is run by Animal Health Ireland and farmers can avail of financial supports towards the cost of the testing and the risk assessments.
